This reel is amazing. Casts far and smooth, best bait caster I've ever used. As long as you take care of the reel it will work like new forever. For maintainence after use rinse under water dry and put lube every where it says on the owners manual. When I did this I didn't put any lube in the lube port on the gears and it sounded grindy and reeled rough. Put lube in the lube port and it will work good as new. Great reel

just purchased the stx and its my first baitcaster infact, ive never even attempted to cast a baitcaster before in my life. i was nervous at 1st but after a little thumb pratice from my couch i went out to make my 1st cast. with the mag break on max and the cent on 3 i made about a 20 yard cast. after that i slowly turned the mag break down and after 15 mins i have the mag break half way off. you really can feel the magnetic break kick in at the end of the cast. casting is a dream and cant wait to use it all summer. and i still havent had backlash ! i got the 8.0:1 gear ratio for spinnerbaits and man does this thing burn. covers water like no other.

I was really excited when I got this reel. Took it out and after a few casts, the reel would not re-engage and just free spooled. I took the reel back and exchanged it thinking it was just a one time thing. I then took the 2nd reel out and low behold it does it again. Now the reel is at my local reel shop waiting on parts on a product that should have been test better before selling to the public. I do like the reel and I hope it gets fixed and work like it is intended to do.

I just got mine 2 days ago. The new gen3 STX is smaller, lighter, and has pretty smooth drag,BUT it makes a loud grinding noise!!!! I actually can feel it through the handle.....I was excited until I started to reel it. I did some research, I am not the only one who has this problem with this reel. People say "some grind some don't". What happend to the quality control? If you really want this reel, it will be a good idea to go to the local store instead of buying it online. At least you can try it before you buy.

I currently have a Revo STX-L-HS, Revo STX-L, Revo SX-L, and a Revo Toro Winch-L and just bought a Revo Winch-L. So far they all seem to be very nice reels. Excellent feel and durability. The drag is unmatched. The braking system is very well built and allows you to tune in any type of bait. I have yet to be let down by any Abu Garcia product.

Good afternoon and thank you for reaching out to us. All Abu Garcia reels carry a 1 year warranty and we will be happy to help. What you describe is not normal. A representative will contact you at the email address that you provided with this review and work with you to get your issue resolved. One thing that we did note in your review is that you fish mostly in saltwater. If this is the case, we just wanted to let you know that the STX is not engineered for saltwater use. If you primarily fish in saltwater, the Revo Inshore is the correct reel for this application since it is designed specifically to handle the salt. Thanks for reaching out to us and a representative will contact you shortly.

Which LP Baitcasters for Saltwater?

"... you fish mostly in saltwater. If this is the case, we just wanted to let you know that the STX is not engineered for saltwater use..."
If you sort your reels by "saltwater", then "low profile baitcaster", the STX most certainly is in the results, contrary to what you stated to the customer.
Please list the Low profile baitcaster reels "engineered for" saltwater use.

This reel looks, feels, and cast great, but the thumb bar is sticking after 2 trips. The Casting and smothness is really incredible but, I purchased this a few weeks ago and I am really disappointed in the quality control Abu Garcia has been having the last few years. I am a dedicated Abu fisherman but this is a huge disappointment. I bought this reel in the new 8.1:1 gearing and was really looking forward to putting this reel to the test, but that opportunity hasn't presented itself, due to the failure. This makes me worry about the direction Abu Garcia is going with the manufacturing of high end reels in the asian markets.

I have been using ABU GARICA reels since I was 15 years old in 1970. My first was a Abu 5000 that my Dad gave me which I still own today. I have used other reels before but keep going back to the ABU GARCIA line and now that is all I use. I have 5000's, 5500's, 6000's, 6500's, Black Max's, Silver Max's, Revo S, Revo SX, Revo STX and will not use any thing else. All these reels still work like new and some are as old as 1970 so if you want the best you will buy only from ABU GARCIA.
Thanks Guys for making a great product.

I have been fishing with Abu Garcia reels for over 40 years, beginning with the red 5000 which I still have and the Abu Garcia Record reel. Both are great reels and both are made in Sweden. You will be greatly disappointed in the REVO STX if you buy one. First, they are not made in Sweden. They are made in Korea. The REVO STX is small and smooth, however it does not cast far and the quality is not there. I would not trust this reel on any large fish either. I was so disappointed in this reel that I took it back and got a refund. If you want a good Abu Garcia reel, stick to the round ones made in Sweden. What has happened to the quality of the new products this company produces. Their older styles are still good. It is the new ones that are not.

Response from Abu GarciaAbu GarciaOctober 25, 2012
Hello - we are sorry to hear that you did not have a good experience with the new Revo STX. There are a couple of things that we would like to address that may help others reading this review to understand the functions of this reel and issues that may have caused some of your difficulty since it has been returned. We manufacture all of our high end low profile reels in Korea because this region leads the market in technology & manufacturing for these types of reels. The facilities that we use here are quite advanced and the attention to quality & technology is of the utmost importance. We do still manufacture a number of our round reels in Sweden. The STX has impressive casting distance if the Infini braking system is properly adjusted. The STX houses 2 braking systems - one centrifugal brake that must be adjusted by opening the palm sideplate to access the brake block pins and one MagTrax magnetic brake that is externally adjustable with the dial. If you weren't getting distance it is most likely due to the improper setting of one or both of these brakes in combination with the tension knob setting. The freespool on any of the new low profile reels is extremely fast and can be fine tuned with these braking systems. Again, we are sorry you didn't have a good experience and hope that you will revisit some of our low profile offerings in the future. Learning to use both a centrifugal brake in combination with a magnetic brake takes a little practice - and typically results in over run when first getting started - but once you get the hang of it, you will get impressive distance with a high level of control.

I agree 100% with the "impressive casting distance" comment made. I used to cast with an 8' Daiwa Shooting Master and now with 6'-6'4" Daiwa Generation Black using 20-35 gm lead plugs and would consistently reach the 60 meter mark with ease. BUILT TO CAST when setup correctly.

i am a total abu garcia fan but i do rate every reel equally. this reel i just purchased a month ago and been fishing with it every weekend now. i wanted to see how it would hold up to the older stx. this reel is much lighter and more compact. the retrieve on the reel feels so smooth and soft as if it was snow falling in your hands. the durability on the gen 3 stx doesnt seem as strong as the older generation but thats the price you pay when buying a lighter and more compact reel. over all this reel is great and well worth the money to buy.

REVO not the casting distance it should be
Posted October 22, 2012
I recently purchased a REVO STX from Bass Pro shops because of the reviews I have read and heard. I like the weight, size and smoothness of the reel, but I purchased this more expensive reel to be able to cast farther, which is what you would expect with 10+1 bearings. I have an Abu Garcia Record reel that has 5 bearings and it casts 50 feet farther. How can this be? What can be done to this reel to make it cast farther. I am disappointed.

I received my Revo STX-L last december as a gift, and being in the midwest I didn't use is until late March. When I first started using it, I was really impressed. I could cast it a long ways, the Infini brake worked great, and it was a very smooth retrieve. I really liked the drag system as well, it is VERY smooth at all levels. I used it at least once a week since March with no complaints, but the last time I fished, it had some issues. I couldn't seem to get the bait out as far as I used to, and I even turned down the cast control, also, it made a few weird clunks randomly while reeling. I also noticed the smoothness wasn't quite the same and it made a squealing sound when casting. I'm pretty disappointed because I have not owned for even a year, and have only actually used it for about 7 months, and when it was new I REALLY liked this reel. I had a Curado that lasted me 10 years without any issues or noises. I was planning on getting a new Gen 3 this winter, but now a little nervous. I intend on contacting customer service about this issue as well.

This reel is the smoothest, lightest, and most compact reel i have ever owned! The 7.1:1 gear ratio lets burn in line and give my baits great action. That compact design topped of with the EVA knobs makes for top of the line comfort.
I paired this with the villian rod and couldnt be more happy!

I have one of Abu Garcia's very first low profile reels..It's around 45 years old..In fact I have bought Abu's Garcia's low profile reels at the rate of 1 or 2 every five years or so, or when a new model comes out..I have so many, and ALL of them still work great, sometimes its hard for me to choose a couple just to go fishing. I love all of them. These Revo reels work great without much effort at all by the user. They cast very smooth, and it's easy to cast for long distances, even using the smallest of lurers or weights. I can not stress enough how good of a reel the STX Revo's are... When Abu's Garcia Revo STX's came out, I bought 3,,1 regular, 1 HS, and 1 L/H ( my wife uses the left hand) ..They are sweetest running reels I own. I use them a lot. I can not wait to get my hands on the newest STX Revo3.,.but I would like to have the New Max just to say I own one,,,but at $350.00 , I can buy a New Revo3 STX HS and spend that extra $150 bucks on a matching 7' rod..Like I said , You can't beat these reels, No way, No how...Abu Garcia fishing reels are just the best reels you can own period..

For years I have never paid more than 80 bucks for a baitcast reel. After trying and buying the STX, that is no more. I used one of these for about 20 minutes and was hooked. I found a good used model in 7.1:1 for about half price. 4 days later, I have 2. I have never used a more simple and smooth reel. Set up is very easy. I recommend setting the break pads to 3 on and 3 off. Set the magnetic break to zero and adjust the spool control knob. Reset your mag break to halfway and have at it. I was very impressed on how easy this was. I had always thought that the more expensive, the more complicated. Not with the STX. Not only does the bent handle and bent drag star keep your hand closer the reel, it sets it off with a super clean look that cant be beat. Makes for a very comfortable retrieve. The spool control knob is very easy to use. On cheaper reels with a heavy bait, you have to crank down so hard on the control knob, that you rob distance during casting. The control knob on the STX is easy to set and doesn't require cranking it down to the point it puts too much pressure on the spool. Major plus when looking for a quality reel. Reel is super smooth. Bearings run clean without any snags, lines are clean, reel is made from quality components and super strong. If you take a cheep reel that has a graphite frame and place it into a rod with a completely exposed reel set, it will flex. This causes bad hook sets and can tweak a reel to cause damage to the bearings etc. After placing the STX into my rod, it was stout as could be. Very solid. Its sad that It took me so long to jump on the STX bandwagon, but I am glad that I did. The 3rd generation STX's are coming out soon. While I'm sure they will be an improvement over the current STX, I don't really see what could be improved.
