Last year I wanted this reel really bad. I tried three different stores and finally came across one. I picked up silvermax combo and was stoked to catch a fish with it however, I constantly get backlashes, ive tried about 8 different types and brands of line and each one just seems to do the same thing so I took the cover off to look at the brakes and it looks like one of the magnets are missing. Id have to say im pretty dissapointed with this reel. I have multiple abu garcias and didnt really have problems with them
I would recommend this to a friend!

Sorry to hear you are having an issue with your Silver Max reel. As far s the magnets go, the Silver Max has 5 magnets on the inside of the sideplate. All Abu Garcia reels and combos carry a one year warranty. One of our customer service representatives will reach out to you at the email address that you submitted with this review to speak directly to you about your issue. If you ever need to get in touch with us directly, our customer service department can be reached at Tel: 1.800.228.4272. We will work hard to get your issue taken care of so you can get back to fishing.

If it is not a mechanical issue that is contributing to backlashes, start by readjusting the casting brakes as follows:

With the rod-reel-line-lure properly assembled, place the tip of your thumb on the line to hold the spool. Depress the thumb bar with the pad of your thumb to disengage the gears. Allow the lure to drop to the ground. If the lure does not fall when the thumb bar is depressed, turn the spool tension knob (located next to the reel handle) counterclockwise (left) to reduce tension on the spool. If the lure falls to the ground and the spool continues to rotate, spool tension is too loose. Rotate the knob clockwise (right) to increase tension. Once the spool tension is set, you can then rotate the Magtrax brake (opposite side of the reel from the handle) to further fine tune you casting.

Have a great week and one of our customer service representatives will be in contact with you shortly.

I bought the silver max over the weekend to replace a very old quantum my dad had given me. I am fishing with plastic worms and a few crank baits, using10 pound berkley vanish fluorocarbon line. I keep getting backlashes and I am adjusting the brake next to the reel. Maybe I'm using the wrong type of line. Any suggestions?

Line Issue
Posted July 4, 2012
I would strongly recommend upgrading to a better quality line. Fluorocarbon tends to be a little stiff but Sufix Invisicast does a great job in terms castability, but it comes with a pretty price tag. A cheaper alternative that's easy to find is Trilene's 100% fluorocarbon. It's a little stiffer but still does a decent job. I had a heck of a time with vanish. It has absolutely terrible abrasion resistance, weak knot strength, and well... it's an all around low quality line. This is just what I've noticed from my experience. Hope this helps!

After a few days of fishing the casting bar does not release with the handle unless you turn on the flipping lever. Not fun too do.
