This is my first experience with Abu Garcia products, and it's not going so well. After strong recommendations from a friend (to be fair he uses Revis, but I'm fishing on a budget) I bought a Black Max II and instantly fell in love....until....only a week later the line guide quit working, it basically went to one side and just stayed there. It would work briefly after giving it a nudge with the finger, but still frustrating! No problem, things happen, sometimes there are just item specific defects, right? I returned the reel to Dicks Sporting Goods and exchanged for another, again, things happen!
Get the new one and fell in love all over again, works great love the feel and it's nice and smooth! Lets skip ahead about 2 months, and BAM....same problem AGAIN! This time there's a twist, when the line guide sticks you give it a nudge and then it just gets stuck on the other side, and so on an so forth! The associate at Bass Pro Shop told me to clean the worm gear with a Q-Tip and put a little dab of reel oil on it....ZERO effect! Still not working!
After the exact same problem happening on two differet reels, This is VERY frustrating since again, I'm not made of money and while 50 bucks may not be much to some people, but for me its a lot, and has me thinking there may be better brands out there!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

i got this reel a few months ago because my buddy Brett had the same one and it was a sweet reel I've fished with it every day from April to July and it has finally started messing up the worm sticks the button wont click after casting about every 20 casts and it screams when i cast it i use 14 lb. Cajun line witch looks amazing on the red spool and is the perfect size for the rating but im looking at getting a "revo sx" witch from what I've read is well worth the price I would like some imput from abu Garcia
I would recommend this to a friend!

well, as you have noticed, im not abu Garcia, but I would advise you take a look at the orra sx. used one for quite a while now. haven't had a problem with it.

Finally,after eyeballing the blackmax for weeks it got the better of me. I must say I am not disappointed at all. Cast like a dream and retrieve is smooth and speedy. Perfect reel for a beater. You can throw it in the truck or kayak/canoe and not have to worry about losing a small fortune if something happens to it.
I would recommend this to a friend!

This was my first baitcaster ever and so far it has been great. The overall feel of it is good and quality seems to be nothing shy of great like all Abu Garcia products. I own three of there rods (Medium Vendetta Spinning, Villian Medium Light Spinning, and a Villian Medium casting) they all perform great as well. I put the Black Max on the Villian rod and it casts good but not as good as I would like. Im using 10lb monofilament throwing 1/4 oz jigs with assorted grubs minnows and swim baits. I love the control of a baitcaster over a spinning real and would love to see Abu Garcia come out with a baitcaster designed for my type of fishing. I live in Central Wyoming and travel the northern half of the state fishing in lakes to small creeks and streams fishing for trout, macks, walleye, and the occasional bass and it would be nice if Abu could design a baitcaster around this type of fishin and be able to throw 1/4 or even 3/16 ounce jigs farther than 30 yards and cast just like my spinning reels do. Other than that this reel performs phenominal for the price and is a great starter real. I have since ordered a Revo Sx baitcaster and cant wait to try it out.
