Abu Garcia has always been a company that stood for quality products. The Abumatic Classic 170i is a result of it. This reel has nothing but quality in it. You can take it on a lake or river and never worry about it. Or you can take it on a ocean adventure and fish with the best of them. This reel has a ultra smooth drag when you need it the most. The front cone is made out of aluminum so you don't have to worry about rusting. Casting is a also a effortless deed. It will cast the same with 12lb test as it would with 4lb test. The gears are also very dependable so you don't have to worry when you have a big one on. This reel would be great for a boy starting out as to a life long "die hard" that is still going for the monster catch of all time.

This is the greatest Abu Garcia reel ever. I have fished with 170s for over 30 years! I have used them to catch evrything from Crappies to the mighty Musky. I like to fish the Mississippi and you never know what fish will bite next. You need to be able to change your drag to be able land that Northern Pike when you were just fishing for Crappies. The 170 has the backbone and the smoothness to handle any fish. I know I have 3 of them. Try my 170 you won't be dissatisfied!

I love this spincast.I have two and caught salmon (pink mostly)for two years.The hook will spend more time wet and in the zone due to this reel,a great light system.I learned that the rotator lip is very soft and can groove quickly.Mono may give better life then florocarbon but they both groove quickly.Please work on the problem,a great reel.

I bought my Abumatic 170 in a set with caster rod in 1972 when I was twelve. I think the set was called Abu Superb. As a child and teenager I used this for many hours per week every summer. Mostly perch, pike, trout...The last 30 years I have used a few times per summer. The reel has never been serviced. It has not been taken care of particularly well. I have used it in saltwater now and then but mostly in lakes. The reel has a few scratches but still looks nice and I think the performance is more than 99% of what it was when new. The rod is fine too. Totally amazing quality. I don't have much user experience with more "advanced" alternatives because I have been happy with this equipment

I have two 170i reels,they are workhorses and keep my lures fishing.One day I broke off about 10 coho with 12# floro-which I started using last year (with great success).The line was failing.The rotator was deeply grooved at the pickup pins and scratched into the grooves.This reel had landed 250 plus fish,the last 50 with florocarbon mainline. The rotator is supposed to be chromed stainless steel.Hard service and the florocarbon may cause failure. Good reel,I love them but replacing this part may be routine service for some fishermen.

Love this reel,so easy to keep the hook wet and fishing.I have abused mine the last 500, or so,pink,coho etc..What went wrong?The spool cover where the pins pop out to catch the line,they grooved by line dig in.I used trilene,but also some vanish florocarbon for leader.Wonderful reel,but not perfect.

I love this thing.I have many spincast as well as other good reels.In the last 6 months it has battled 500 salmon and steelhead,fishing is great.My landing percentage may be 50 % but not the reel's fault.It is great to trust your gear.I fish all the time and put in 10 hour days,these are very strong fish.Thank you Abu.
