I like this combo it's a good entry level setup gears are smooth, casts nice. I would not have bought this if it wasn't on sale it had a bent handle the drag star would not turn so I fixed that works fine now. I love Abu Garcia never been unhappy with a product. I just wonder why there are not any left hand reel casting combos. This makes getting into a left hand casting setup twice the cost. I would buy 5 or 6 of these combos if they had left hand reels.

i purchased a silver max combo and a black max combo. when i first took them to fish the rods cracked all along the side of the rods, and continues to chip, the reels performed smoothly, but the inside was just deteriorated. i have tried to fix them but they just get worse, so can i get them both replaced?

this my first low profile baitcaster i used it for the first time.this morning was so happy at how smooth it cast and how fast it is on the retrive.and the rod is really light and sensitive.great combo thank you santa.as always oil the reel before use

Pulled a 2.5 lb bass out of the brush. Nice & smooth crank bait casting using 20# braid. The rod tip is soft enough to feel the bite and has good backbone when setting the hook. Currently using a 6'6" which helps with rod storage. Will buy a 7' next purchase for drop shots and jigging. Very pleased with performance and flipping switch on reel. Great value for the price!

I posted a review previously concerning problems with my new silver max-2. I managed to fix the problems myself and now my two reels work flawlessly. The first problems was constant backlishing because a spacer was not installed at the factory. The second problem was that the handle and release button would become jammed sometimes. I dissassembled the reel and gave it a thorough cleaning, now it works very well. What I still don't like about the reel is that it doesnt seat firmly on most Abu Garcia rods of a comporable price and the rods the reels come with are not very sensitive. I created spacers from tackle box organizers which work pretty well. The quality of the handles need to be improved because they become loose after a few months of extensive use. I would recommend this reel for the average weekend angler and tournament fisherman--just clean the reel and avoid getting grit and grime near the working parts.
I will recommend relocating the flipping swicth to a location less likely to be accidentally engaged during casting. Most people with big hands palm thier reels which makes it easy to make contact with the flipping switch.

I bought this silver max combo at walmart at the start of this year. second trip i lost the cover on the third eye down from the tip. I've landed some nice fish with it with out the cover. This is the first year ive been able to fish since getting out of the service so i needed new equipment. Abu Garcia has always been known for good products so i gave them a shot. This is my first bait caster in 10 years and the only thing that let me down is the eye cover on the guides.The reel is outstanding and is smoother than some of the others out there for a higher price.The rod will need repaired or fixed before long but its great deal with just a little issue.I will probably buy another before the summer is out.

I love the SilverMax reel, in fact, I have two of them. However, the Abu rod on the SM combo broke about a foot from the tip when I caught my second fish, a bass about 10" long. Too bad this reel wasn't paired with a Berkely Lightning Rod like the first SM combo I bought. I highly recommend the reel but pair it with another rod.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

totally impressed with the entire Max lineup! great ergos, smooth, strong, and the right actions. Only thing I can't figure is why they put the flipping switch on the 6.1 Silver Max instead of the 7.1 Pro Max, would make more sense if your using them for the intended applications by gear ratio... oh well, love em' anyway. #now if they'd just make one in a 5.1 ratio for crankin'#

I've stayed away from baitcasters for the past 15 years, due to a bad experience and I've used spinning reels ever since. I figured it was about time that I gave baitcasters another shot. I did my research to make sure I was getting the best combo for my money. I went back and forth between two different combo sets and finally decided on the Silver Max combo. The gear ratio, balance, and smoothness won me over. I plan on adding more Abu Garcia products to my fishing arsenal.
