I purchased this reel needing a reel to cast some of my lighter baits. I mounted the reel on a 7" Abu Garcia vendetta rod as this is one of my favorite rods to use. This made for an awesome looking rig, but the casting performance of this reel is terrible.The line tries to twist. I have tried several different types of line, even had the reel professionally spooled, but the result hasn't changed. I fish several times a month and as a loyal customer of Abu Garcia all of my rods & reels are proudly branded with their name. I still have my receipt but have thrown away all packaging to the reel. I wish I could just return it and buy another Pro Max instead.

I was initially excited to receive this reel as a birthday present. However, upon removing the Orra S from its package, I encountered the same grinding noise when I turned the crank that others have mentioned in their reviews. In addition, upon placing the reel in the reel seat of my ugly stik lite, the piece connecting the reel to the reel seat broke in half. I never even had a chance to bring it to the water. Save yourself some stress (not to mention the $79.99 it cost) and purchase another reel. I recommend the Penn Fierce or Abu Garcia Cardinal. The Cardinal is the same high quality expected of Abu Garcia, and has a much smaller price tag to boot.

I had no problems last season (2012) with this reel. I expect to be using it a long time due to its robust parts. Perhaps the negative commentors should try reel oil and a reel cover and not leaving it in the pickup truck.
I would recommend this to a friend!

How to switch handle...

On the other side (opposite of the handle) there is a knob that you turn to unscrew the handle. Unscrew it all the way and you should be able to pull the handle out. Insert the handle into the opposite side and screw back on the cap/knob. Takes 30 seconds... good luck!

my wife went out and bought me this reel for christmas and it flet really good at the store i like it alot.... well she bought it a couple days later and suprised me with it the thing is its missing the handle and she lost the receipt so my question is how do i buy just the handle itself bc i cant return it and get another thank u..

I have four of these reels that I was given as a present last Christmas. They felt great at first, and then after a little use they one by one started locking up and grinding like the bearings were trying to lock up. I am a avid fisherman and use lots of different kinds of reels during a tournament season. i know how to take them apart and work on them, so I dissaembled them and regrreased and oiled them several times. They do work, but they are far from being as smooth as they should be.I am very disappointed with these reels, which is unfortunate because I have had very experiences with all of there products until now. I hope they will make this right.

hi abu garcia i'm a fan from malaysia and i love all the reels from abu,,from baitcaster,spinning and other..i have and orra s30 reel i bought about 2 month ago..in the first month i've go fishing for a snakehead and caught one about 2 pounder..the problem is a week later my reel have the grinding noise every one is talking about the gear is still smooth but i don't like the grinding noise..i hope u can solve whats the problem in my reels.anyway i still love all abu garcia product and will keep supporting it...ABU GARCIA 4 LIVE..:-)

I bought this Orra S40 before the Bass season started this year and matched it with the 7"M Vendetta rod spooled with 20lb Power Pro braid. I bought the combo at a really good price so I gave it a try. I am quite impressed with the combo and it works well together. I found the reel smooth and didn't give me a problem at all this year. I used it with plastics, crankbaits, buzzbaits and spinners. It's a great all around combo!

i have used this reel 4 times now for 2-3 hours of casting hard plastics yet the most recent outing the reel is becoming extremely stiff and feel like its going to seize up :( i was hoping this would perform better than my cardinal reel but it appears not! it has been washed off after every trip and looked after.

As someone else wrote "I want to love the Orra, but am getting the same persistent grinding noise/feel other reviewers mentioned."
This is so disappointing to me as I am very much a beginner and I just need my gear to work right out of the box.
Someone here suggested lubricating the wheel to fix the problem, but I have no clue what kind of lubrication to use or where to put it, and frankly I dont want to spend any money on something that is supposed to work right away.
I am located in Denmark and would like to be refered to someone who can help me out.
So sad and disappointed.

I recently purchased an orra s40 and loaded it with 15lb berkley braid. On the first day out i was trolling a small spinner over a reef and hooked 30cm goatfish. The reel performed amazing and soon had it in the boat. I then caught a 40cm queenfish. The drag worked a treat. We ate the fish that night!

I purchased the Orra S with a 7' M Vendetta pole several months ago, and I am utterly impressed with the combo! I originally bought it because of the value and for the unique matching colors.
I have landed several Chain Pickerel 18"+, two Northern Pike 24"+, three Small-mouth Bass 16"+ and two Large-mouth Bass 18"+ with no problems whatsoever! I use black braided line on it, which not only looks really nice on the reel, but it preforms very well! The retrieval speed is great for swim baits, and the reel is extremely smooth every time.
I have recently become interested in buying a Baitcaster and there is no doubt in my mind that it will be an Abu Garcia! If you're in the market for a new pole or reel, do yourself a favor and buy something here! I love their products, and I have already recommended them to friends and family!

I have been using ABU reels for over 40 years, I just started using a spin reel for my Kayak fishing. I started with a cheap $14 Japanese reel cause it was given to me. I finally decided to upgrad to better real. I decided to go with the trusted quality of ABU I have been use to all these years. I was not disappointed. Just like other ABU products I have used in past the reel was a little tight when new just needs breaking in. Good reel for the price.

This is one great reel . I own 2 of them , the s3 & s4 . Both are as smooth as silk . Using braided line is no problem , cast far and smooth .

My new Orra s looks and feels good in the hand. Right out of the box it was very hard to crank. It was as if the handle kept tightening up as line was retreived to the point the handle would not turn. Until I can remedy this issue I can't recommend it.

I currently have an Abu Garcia Ambassador, couple Cardinals, Soron, and this Orra S. In fact, I have only owned Abu Garcia reels for about 10 years; have also given several as gifts. I want to love the Orra, but am getting the same persistent grinding noise/feel other reviewers mentioned. The Orra bail is improved, but the retrieve is oddly fast (I should have seen that in the specs) and that seems to cause line problems. I've never had line issues with any other Abu reel. The Cardinals are better performers and have a much lower price. Given that this is Abu's only spinner at this price point, my next reel at this level will probably be from another manufacturer. I would not buy this reel again or even give it as a gift.

I have been using this reel with a Vendetta rod. The setup is perfect and looks and feel great. The only issue I have is that the crank handle is loose and there is no way to tighten it up. The handle seems to be riveted to the gear shaft and does not have a way to tighten it. Other than that... what and awesome product

You have to hold the rotor when you tightin it .it has handle screw in .hope this helps

Very good made reel and stylish. I use braided line and never had a single problem. I can cast this feel just about as far as my baitcaster and just as easy. My buddy was amazed the other day on how far this reel would cast with a texas rig and pitching it. I have it on a vengence pole which is a very sturdy accurate pole. With this combo, since late spring, I have felt more fish and caught more bigger fish than ever.
This will not be my last abu garcia rod or reel.

To anyone with a noisey retrieve!! All you need to do is lubricate the line bearing!! This happens to many new reels not just this model. Remove the screw where the bail meets the rotor. Underneath is the line bearing. Lubricate and problem solved. I had the same issue with mine and i lubed it and it is like butter even under a load. Trust me very simple fix!!

I just got the Orra S with a Vendetta rod a few weeks ago. Put some line(braided #12) on the setup. First seemed kind of short, and when reeling in the crank bait, it sounded like it was grinding or had sand in it. Tried it a few more times, then switched to a Mono line to see if that would help....NOPE!
Stopped using it and sent it into Abu, got it back in a very quick time frame. Slapped some Mono line and a crank bait, and went to the local lake to give it a go. Same thing....short cast and now its got a weird wabble when reeling in. Even sounds like metal-on-metal is hitting sometimes.
You could say i am disappointed, I have 3 Abu Garcia bait casters that have never had a problem. I decided to go with Abu on a new spinning reel, now i won't call it a mistake, BUT i will call it mis-fortune. Great company, but i fear i got one of the few LEMONS that just don't work properly.
Whats worse is that i bought this setup for a trip I'm leaving for on monday. Unfortunately ill have to leave the Orra S at home.

All you need to do is lubricate the line bearing!! This happens to many new reels not just this model. Remove the screw where the bail meets the rotor. Underneath is the line bearing. Lubricate and problem solved. I had the same issue with mine and i lubed it and it is like butter even under a load. Trust me very simple fix!!
