I was in the market for a new bait caster for catfishing and new that the Abu Garcia c3 was the reel for me. However, I noticed that it was almost 40 dollars more then this reel and still held the same line as the c3 and had the right gear ratio I wanted. IT might not have the same drag system but that is an easy aftermarket upgrade. The 40 bucks I saved on this reel compared to the c3 allowed me to get a new rod too. First cast on the river landed a 9 pound channel cat with out any issues. Few big gar as well.
Casting - 150 yards of 8 pound mono and 150 yars of 30 pound braid spooled on it with a 2oz slip rig casted very far with it mounted to a 8 foot rod. Not a single hesitation of backlash. 6 pin brake and a good cost knob. Make sure the bait clicker is off for casting and setting this up, will improve casts.
Drag- No big flat heads yet on it so not sure how well it is in the feild but the 9 pound channel came in nice. however I set some drag test up at home and it was very smooth. I have a catmaxx bait caster and the drag feels like someone first starting out on a manuel gear box- or like jack links made.
Craftsmenship- I felt the c4 at bass pro and as a mechanical engineer I had a crises, good thing I brought my inhaler. When I think of a mechanical object and precision, I think of that. The button push might be the definition of crisp. The c3 for the most part felt the same...I can see why they cost what they do. So I can see how people say a china made reel would not hold that quality and crafsmenship however, this is not true. IT feels solid and very well made- and more importantly well designed. It might not have got me all worked up like the c4 and c3 did but looking at it over the design is solid and the materials are good. I dont think Abu Garcia will allow their name on a bad product so I am sure they have quality engineers checking those every step of the way.
Overall, if you are looking for a good fishing set up for a wide range of small medium and even some larger fish but cant justify more expensive reels this is for you. You can always hot rod these things and get some better drag washers for it or something if your out on the congo with jermy wade and some river monster burns up the drag. I will be getting the c3 soon for another rig and then maybe the c4 for salmon since the gear ratio is a bit to "i cant drive 55" for my catfishing taste. Give this a try, if you backlash its not the reels fault and keep the lines tight!

Best reel I have ever owned, liked it so much bought another one. I always used spincast reels in the past and now live on the coast and wanted a reel that you could still catch bass with and a blue fish, flounder or red drum! Not having any experince with bait case reels previously I was concerned that every cast would end up being a backlash, but I have not had one yet! Make sure the brake is set correctly and I have casted beetle spins to flounder rigs with 4 oz weight and live cigar minnows and never a backlash! Just a fantastic reel; wish I would not have wasted money over the years on spincast reels and had bought an Abu Garcia years ago! Paired the reel with a Ugly Stik GX2 rod, fish dont have a chance:)
